Nato a Londra, inizia come attore di teatro in Inghilterra, poi si trasferisce negli Stati Uniti trovando impiego a Broadway. E' "Garbitsch" in The Great Dictator di Chaplin ed è ricordato soprattutto per aver interpretato la parte di "Moyarty" nello "Sherlock Holmes" di Basil Rathbones. Tra i suoi altri film: Firefly (1937), The Philadelphia Story (Scandalo a Filadelfia, 1940), Wake of the Red Witch ( La Strega Rossa , 1948), The Egyptian (Sinuhe l'Egiziano, 1954), Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea (1961) e My Fair Lady (My Fair Lady, 1964), uscito dopo la sua morte.
